Get Up and Go: Smoothie EditionPosted: August 1, 2013
Justin told me that he wants to get up and out of the house bright and early on his days off, but he also wants to eat something delicious that he doesn’t treat himself to on the days he is working. My solution? A smoothie! I have tried endless combinations of ingredients for smoothies. I have learned that I really don’t like yogurt (or dairy in general) in my smoothie, banana is enough of a sweetener for me, and lemon juice is the secret to success.
Today I tried something new in my smoothie, celery! I have a secret, I don’t love celery. It’s actually more that I don’t love the texture of celery, I do however, love the flavor. This is what I came up with today for a smoothie:
2 stalks celery
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup baby spinach (I also like kale)
1 small ripened banana
2 tbsp flax seeds
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 cup water (or ice)
Directions: I always grind my flax seeds first to make sure that they are well ground in the smoothie. The rest is a free-for-all, I just add everything in however I feel like it (I did cut the celery into smaller pieces)! I don’t like my smoothies super cold, so I use water rather than ice. I also play with the proportions as I go. Sometimes I end up adding more lemon juice, less water, or more greens. It just depends on my mood. Some people like their smoothies to be on the sweeter side; honey or agave nectar are really great sweeteners for smoothies. What is your favorite smoothie combination?
